It has been announced by a Greek cabinet offical for immigration that the government is planning to increase apartment housing for the refugees who are currently in Greece.

Deputy Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas yesterday said the government wants to improve many of the state-run refugee camps on the mainland, where there are currently 57,000 refugees and migrants.

Vitsas also announced plans to help congested conditions at camps around the Greek Islands including Lesvos, which have housed all new arrivals since the European Union and Turkey agreement commenced in March.

About 10,000 people are in the island camps and their conditions have been criticised by humanitarian organisations worldwide. Vistas added that refugees who have completed the first stage of their asylum application would be able to move to the mainland.
