Greece’s President Prokopis Pavlopoulos called for FYROM to change its constitution if it wants membership into the European Union family and NATO.
Pavlopoulos made the statements on Sunday during a ceremony at Pieria where he was proclaimed a citizen of the municipality Pydna-Kolindros.
The President noted that this pre-condition was important for FYROM’s accession to the EU and NATO as it “will eliminate any trace of irredentism”.
“The solution of the name issue is a basic prerequisite – and this is not just a Greek position, it is NATO’s position, it is the EU’s position – it has to change its constitution,” Pavlopoulos underlined..
The President also sent a message to Turkey that relations of friendship, good neighbourliness and European perspective are going through the respect of international law and the acquis communautaire.
