A new chapter begins for Greek citizens today, with the easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

“All this time the Greeks have universally proved that when we stand united, we are capable of the best and we have proved with prudence and courage that we are able to break the chain of transmission of the virus. We have proved that everyone can learn from us,” Civil Protection Deputy Minister for Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias said.

After 6 weeks, 42 days and 1008 hours on Monday at 6am “a new battle begins,” he added.

Hardalias called on Greek citizens to consistently observe the protection measures. “From Monday we are all called to build a new wall to limit its spread, to resist, to continue with the same consistency, with the same persistence in the battle, a battle that will judge the final outcome of the war against the disease and that our weapon is to observe the rules in our movements and our social interactions.”

During the daily press briefing, he again reiterated the mandatory use of  a face mask while in enclosed spaces or taking public transportation. Failure to comply with this measure will result in a €150 fine.

Major General pathologist Dimitris Hatzigeorgiou also announced 6 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Greece in the last 24 hours, and 1 new death.

The total Covid-19 infections in Greece stands at 2,626.

Deaths total 144 since the start of the outbreak, while 37 patients are being treated in Intensive Care Units.
