In what comes as a shock to many, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan late Saturday called for peace with Greece, on a national Turkish television channel.
“Now we want peace, peace with Greece is worth more than anything,” he said.
According to reports the Turkish PM went on to say he does not want any more tension with his neighbouring country.
Erdogan also spoke positively about Greece’s PM Alexis Tsipras saying that “the young and dynamic Prime Minister of Greece wants to take a new step. I found this on my visit to Greece, and in the same spirit I saw the Greek president Pavlopoulos.”
At the same time, other Turkish reports claim Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul had written to his Greek counterpart Stavros Kontonis saying “Greece is becoming a gathering place for criminals” after a court ruling releasing one of eight Turkish servicemen seeking asylum in Greece.
Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim also slammed the Council of State ruling, saying Greece was becoming a “safe haven” for Turkey’s enemies.
