Athenian authorities have greenlit a long awaited initiative giving the historic centre of Athens the opportunity to shine anew, as the country’s Central Council for Modern Monuments and Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis, have approved repair and reconstruction works of the historic centre of Athens.
The works will allow some of the most beautiful quarters of Athens to be highlighted, visually enhanced and made more pedestrian friendly and will cover the highly popular central areas marked by the following streets: Evripidou, Praxitelous, Leka, Athinaidos, Agias Eirinis and Athinas.
Estimated to cost approximately 2.5 million euros, the works will focus on Athens’ financial and trade district, and will include pedestrianised road network, repairs to pavements and roads, the upgrade of central squares, the addition of green spaces and lighting, repairs to damaged facilities, limiting cafeteria and restaurant spaces, tearing down unauthorised constructions and tackling illegal parking.
“We want to improve the image of the city towards that of a modern European capital. The issue is to maintain the balance between history and growth,” Mayor Kaminis said.
