The celebrated Greek statesman Pericles is credited with ordering the design and construction of the Parthenon between 447 and 432 BC as a temple for Athena—the goddess of wisdom, arts and literature and war. Still dominating the modern city of Athens, the Parthenon is a magnificent testimony to the glory and renown the city enjoyed throughout antiquity.
